This International Women’s Day the focus turns to the phrase “Each for Equal”, a call for equality across all beings. It’s hard to believe that in today’s age, equality is still absent for girls in certain settings. In sports, at work and across the media. Equality should always be present, no matter who you are and how you choose to represent yourself. But oftentimes, a lack of equality can leave girls feeling like they have to conform to something that isn’t a true reflection of themselves, it makes us apprehensive to be experimental.

Ahead of IWD on Sunday 8th March, we spoke to 3 of our empowering Footasylum Women's ambassadors on how to navigate your personality through clothing. They shared their opinions on style, and using it in a creative way to let your character shine through every day- no matter where life takes you. Keep reading for interviews with Georgia May Heath, Jessy Lawrence and Reka Nagy- Miticzky.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do.

I am 22 years old, from Surrey, I was originally a makeup artist but now I am a full-time blogger. I enjoy doing anything that involves being creative whether that’s makeup, fashion, art or even tiktok dances.

Explain your style to us.

I’d definitely say I have a few different styles depending on my mood, sometimes I’m super girly and other times I look to more Tom boyish. I love 90s fashion so I aim to bring that vibe into everything I wear.

How has the power of dressing and clothing been important to building your identity?

How I dress and my style is super important to me, because I feel it’s a way of expressing my creativity and character! I think it is so empowering when you find an outfit that fits you as a person and makes you feel confident in yourself.

What advice would you give younger girls who also want to use fashion and style to build their confidence?

Firstly, wear what makes you feel good, do it for yourself not for others. You don’t need to follow the crowd to be cool. Express your character and be individual! I always appreciate a person who pushes the boat out and wears what they want, even if it’s not to everyone’s taste, but they wear it because they enjoy it and it makes them feel good.

I’m Jess and I’m the social media manager at Vogue Business, I create content around streetwear on the side and am also a signed model with Crumb Agency

Explain your style to us

I’d say my style is a mix of streetwear, vintage and of course sneakers!

How has the power of dressing and clothing been important to building your identity?

The power of dressing and clothing has been massively important in building and shaping my identity as it’s how I show my creativity, what I enjoy and even connect with like-minded people. Dressing in a certain way and loving It has also given me opportunities in the fashion world I wouldn’t have thought were possible.

What advice would you give younger girls who also want to use fashion and style to build their confidence?

For young girls wanting to use fashion to build their identity and confidence I’d say experiment until you find what makes you comfortable, and if you find what inspires you explore that where possible. You have to start from somewhere, whether it’s finding a nice piece on Depop or making a mood board of your dream style, you can build momentum and encourage yourself to do more to grow and learn. Finding people that you can bounce ideas off and enjoy fashion with is also really important for confidence building and affirmation, nothing beats a solid friendship where you share a passion such as style.

My name is Reka Nagy- Miticzky, I am 24 years old and I am a professional dancer and model.

Explain your style to us

I’d say my style varies a lot from feminine to very sporty at times. This depends on what work I have on, for example when I have dance jobs with all day rehearsals I literally live in tracksuit, cropped tops/ jumpers with trainers. I think anyone who knows me would also add that I love hats (literally any kind), comfortable trainers and anything pink or grey.

How has the power of dressing and clothing been important to building your identity?

Due to my profession, the power of dressing has always played a very important role in my life. Throughout my training it was always stressed by my teachers that your style and dress sense will play a key role in auditions and castings as it does not only help you stand out, but also introduces you before you even get a chance to speak.
This gave me the push to make braver/ bolder choices at times whilst focusing on trying to find a style that best reflects who I am.

What advice would you give younger girls who also want to use fashion and style to build their confidence?

My advice to all girls out there is to just go for it! Take a risk and make braver choices because it will have a huge effect on your self-esteem. Also, if you wear things with confidence, NO ONE QUESTIONS IT!
P.s never ever try to save money on trainers! Your feet carry you through life, make sure you’re nice to them.
