The Dr. Martens brand came about in the 1960s when Northamptonshire-based shoemakers, the Griggs family, were inspired by a German doctor who sought to create an air-cushioned boot to relieve him from his injured foot. Dr. Klaus Märtens and Dr. Herbert Funck started to produce what would form the foundation of the timeless boot.

After redesigning the heel and adding the now-iconic, trademark yellow stitching, the first pair of Dr. Martens were born.
