Adidas works hard at making sure its performance range of sports gear is stylish and functional.

Adidas has to be the most famous sports brand. The Adidas label is associated with some of the finest sports gear around – worn by Olympic athletes and premier footballers. David Beckham has had a long association with the Adidas brand. But the sports legend doesn't rest on its laurels. Adidas is always seeking out the best sporting talent. In 2008, Adidas nabbed Danny Cipriani to be the brand ambassador for Adidas after he was dubbed the new Beckham. Adidas has always had strong roots in the world of football. In 2006, the sports giant even designed a high tech football for the World Cup. The design in some ways is symbolic of how far sporting gear has come under the guiding force of Adidas. Once upon a time, footballers were happy to kick around the pitch a pig's bladder. Now, footballs, like sports clothing and trainers have incorporated the latest technology. The ball by Adidas prompted Beckham, the brand's ambassador, to say it was 'very impressive'.

Adidas Score

The official World Cup football took three years to develop – it's said to be the most perfect football possible – 30% more accurate than its closest rival. But the old Adidas rivals, Nike are never too far behind, with footballers sponsored by Nike speaking out against the Adidas Teamgeist ball in favour of Nike's Total 90 Aero. Adidas say its ball is superior because it's rounder – ensuring it is more accurate. The perfect sphere has always been difficult to achieve because of the stitching used in classic footballs. Adidas overcame this problem by using fewer panels and removing unnecessary seams. Added to the perfect roundness of the Adidas ball, coating specialists developed a 1.1 millimetre skin designed to stop the ball absorbing water and to ensure the ball returns to its original shape when kicked. The Adidas balls cost £75 each.
