Orange is the New Black
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of years, no doubt you’ve heard of Orange is the New Black. The show follows the inmates of notorious women’s prison Litchfield Penitentiary, and features a diverse cast of strong female leads.
Each episode follows the backstory of one of the inmates, and has so far tackled issues such as poverty, racial identity, addiction, abuse and gang culture - to name a few. What started out as the story of Piper Chapman surviving prison life has evolved into a complex mix of tragedy, drama and dark comedy - and we LOVE it.
Marvel’s Jessica Jones made television history when they recently announced that all 13 episodes of season 2 (which fittingly premiers today!) were directed by women. The show itself follows superhero Jessica Jones as she battles external forces, as well as dealing with her own internal issues.
The writers of Jessica Jones depict the title character as a stand-alone female heroine who is not short of flaws, making us root for her even more.
Why would a woman murder a man she had seemingly never seen before in cold blood? The Sinner follows Jessica Biel as Cora Tannetti, who committed the crime in front of her family and the general public, and deals with issues like sisterhood and grief.
Glow is from the creators of Orange is the New Black, and is set in the world of women’s wrestling in the 1980s. The show explores the complexity of female friendships, and its diverse cast portray women following their wildest dreams in such a way that it makes us want to don a leotard and get in the ring ourselves.
Bold Type is all about women building each other up as they work their way up the career ladder and juggle work with relationships. While the show has all the makings of a cliche 90s TV series - girls in New York working and partying - the characters in Bold Type are always supportive of each other, and find themselves in relatable situations, making this a must see for International Women’s Day.
