From a very long list, we’ve picked ten that everyone at The Lowdown is excited about. Check them out and get excited with us:
Release Date: 10/02/2016
For those of you who don’t know (and if you don’t, what are you playing at?), Deadpool is Marvel Comics’ infamous ‘Merc with a Mouth’. Also known as Wade Wilson, Deadpool (played by Ryan Reynolds) is a dual sword wielding, gun-toting superhuman with the ability to heal any wounds. He’s basically Wolverine, but the claws have been traded for toilet jokes. Do we need to say any more?
2. Zoolander 2
Release Date: 12/02/2016
It’s been pretty much a million years since the first Zoolander film came out, but the story of two dim-witted male models battling it out to prove who’s ‘so hot right now’ is as funny today as it was back in 2001. It was a bit of a surprise when Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson announced they’d be coming back as Derek Zoolander and Hansel a whole 15 years later, but we’re not complaining! Get ready for more Blue Steel and (hopefully) more laughs.
3. Triple 9
Release Date: 19/02/2016
Brace yourselves. If the trailer for Triple 9 is anything to go off, this is going to be one hell of a brutal ride. Starring Casey Affleck (brother of Ben), Woody Harrelson (True Detective), Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) and Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead), surely there’s no way this could be anything but amazing? Get ready for two hours of corrupt cops, impossible heists and action-packed shoot-outs. Fans of GTA V should feel well at home!
4. 10 Cloverfield Lane
Release Date: TBC (but probably early March sometime)
Don’t worry! If you’re one of the people who felt sick after watching JJ Abrams’ original shaky-cam massive monster masterpiece, you’ll be pleased to hear that there isn’t a hand-held camera to be seen in 10 Cloverfield Lane. Described as a ‘sequel but not a sequel’, Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) crashes her car and wakes up in a bunker owned by a mysterious man who tells her that some kind of global accident has made going outside impossible. Just like the last Cloverfield film, everything else is a huge secret! Including the UK release date, apparently.
5. Independence Day: Resurgence
Release date: 24/06/2016
Another blast from the past, the sequel to Independence Day will be releasing exactly 20 years after Will Smith ended the first alien invasion. Unfortunately, Big Willy won’t be returning for Independence Day 2 (boo!), but Jeff Goldblum will, so that’s OK, right? In this follow-up, the aliens are back, but in their 20 year break from the battlefield, humans have learnt how to fire laser guns and aren’t afraid to use them.
6. Batman v Superman – Dawn of Justice
Release date: 25/06/2016
If you haven’t heard about this one, you definitely need to come out from under that rock more. Putting Ben Affleck in the Batsuit for the first time, Dawn of Justice sees an angry Dark Knight battling Henry Cavill’s Superman. Meanwhile, Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) is off creating Doomsday, a classic DC Comics villain hellbent on destruction. Featuring appearances from Wonder Woman and Aquaman it looks like this could well be an intro to the Justice League (DC’s equivalent to Marvel’s Avengers!).
Release date: 15/07/16
Who you gonna call? Well, definitely not the original Ghostbusters, they’re way too old! A reboot/sequel to the original films, 2016’s Ghostsbusters swaps guys for girls, featuring an all-female ghost-busting team. Starring the hilarious Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, with promises of cameos from the original cast, we’ve got everything crossed that this movie lives up to the Ghostbusters name.
8. Suicide Squad
Release date: 05/08/2016
Another comic book movie (2016 is full of them!), Suicide Squad features a superhero team with a difference: They’re all bad guys! Including some of DC Comics’ most famous villains, the Suicide Squad is made up of The Joker (Jared Leto), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), and Deadshot (Will Smith) to name just a few. With a massive cast and an awesome trailer, being bad never sounded so good.
Release date: 16/09/2016
Noel Clarke has just begun filming the final instalment in the Kidulthood trilogy, and based off the last two films, Brotherhood is going to be heavy. Starring everyone’s favourite big man with a beard, Stormzy, as Yardz, we’ve got our hopes set high for this. And even if the film isn’t great, no doubt the soundtrack will be.
10. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Release date: 16/12/2016
2015’s Star Wars film, The Force Awakens, was basically the best thing to happen to cinema in a long time. Some people are a little sceptical about the idea of a new Star Wars film every year for the next however many years, but Rogue One promises to be something a little different. Dark and gritty, it goes back to the original Star Wars movie, telling the story of the team of Rebel pilots who stole plans to the Deathstar and gave them to Princess Leia.
Have we missed any films that you’re looking forward to off the list? Give us a shout in the comments and we might just add them!
