The brand history of Ugg
In 1978 a young Australian surfer called Brian Smith took a bag of sheepskin boots to California, USA. There he befriended a group of surfers with the hope of introducing them to his boots. From there the UGG Australia brand began to take shape.
By 1995 Deckers Outdoor Corporation bought UGG Australia and began working on making the brand what it is today. They began by progressing the brand from a sports brand to a more high end fashion brand.
By the early millennium, UGG Australia had firmly found its place in the fashion eye line. Celebrities were a big help in making the brand more recognised with Pamela Anderson being one of the first to be photographed in them while on the set of Baywatch. They then became a firm favourite on the celebrity scene. UGG Australia was featured a number of times on Oprah Winfrey’s ‘Favourite Things’ feature during her show.
In 2003, UGG Australia presented its first coloured boot adding to the ever growing UGG Australia family and by 2005 the Baby UGG Australia range and accessories had been launched. 2005 was also the first year that UGG Australia presented its first Spring and Metropolitan lines.
Now, in 2011, more than 30 years since the beginning of this international brand, UGG Australia is going back to its roots. This AW collection see’s them launching a larger, more detailed men’s range than ever before. They have enlisted the help of American Footballer and Husband to Gisele Bundchen, Tom Brady to be the face of their new range. They hope bringing in such a high profile name will help to re-launch the men’s line, it was originally a men’s brand after all. I think it is safe to say, they will succeed. They are also entering the high fashion scene with boots made and featured in one of the fashion capitals of the world, Milan, Italy.
