Nike are, of course, one of the biggest brands on the planet, with multiple million pound sponsorship deals, great range of sporting apparel and footwear that is on the cutting edge of design and technology.

All brands have to start somewhere and, for Nike, the dream began on the running tracks of the University of Oregon, where it’s two founders, Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight met some 50 years ago. Few could have predicted just how large Nike would become in the subsequent decades and it is now firmly established as one of the world’s biggest brands. Nike is best known for their footwear but they are also equally as successful in the world of sporting apparel with their range of sports clothing ranging from hoodies to polo-shirts.

Nike – Phenomenal Growth
The rate at which Nike grew as a brand was astronomical and this was, in no small part, as a result of the excellence of their clothing line and footwear range. The Nike brand first appeared in the 1972 Olympics and since then their rise has been unprecedented. Nike clothing can be seen on the world’s most famous sportsman ranging from Cristiano Ronaldo to Tiger Woods which just goes to show how diverse the Nike brand is. Having such high profile endorsements from the world of sport has certainly helped to make Nike one of the most popular high street brands and their retro trainers are utterly synonymous with cool.

Nike – Little Known Facts
Nike is such an advertising and sporting colossus that there are few facts about the in’s and out’s of the company that are little known. There are, however, a number of Nike facts that are seldom realised, which include:
  • The company garners its name from, Nike, the Greek God of Victory. The name ‘Nike’ was devised by the company’s first employee, Roger Johnson, who claims the idea came to him in his sleep.
  • The famous Nike tag-line ‘Just Do It’ was created by advertising copywriter, Dan Wieden.
  • The ‘Swoosh’ logo that is synonymous with the Nike brand was created for a fee of just $35 by a young Oregon design student who was later rewarded with Nike stock.
