Adidas – The Designer Touch

Adidas is known for mixing the worlds of sport and fashion with celebs as diverse as David Beckham and Stella McCartney on its books.

Adidas may be one of the biggest sports brands, but the clothing and trainers giant is also making strides on the catwalk. It's street wear has always been high profile and sought after – but perhaps the brand has never been associated with high-end fashion houses like Gucci or Prada. Adidas appeals to the spectrum of society, it doesn't have the snob value of catwalk labels, and yet it certainly has the style. The fact Adidas used Stella McCartney in 2007 for the Adidas for Fashion week shows how close the brand is to the fashion pulse.

Adidas by Stella McCartney

Adidas is no stranger to having a multitude of stars on its books – most of which are from the sporting world. Its association with McCartney taps into the Kate Moss world of the London fashion scene. The association of the McCartney image was also good marketing clout for Adidas, with the McCartney ethics, committed as the family are to animal rights. McCartney's Adidas range illustrates her ability to blend functional sportswear with fashionable style. Stella's association with Adidas dates back to 2004, when she was approached to design the chicest yoga, tennis, gym and running gear around. “Each season we are able to merge more and more performance products with style,” McCartney has said. Her signature designs for Adidas include hooded sweaters, parkas, jersey tops and pants.

Sexy Sportswear

And her sports lines have been received as a hit – with the Metro announcing she made 'gym gear sexy'. A far cry from the days of lycra leotards. The annual Adidas fashion shows are leaps and bounds from the more traditional catwalk; in 2008, athletes wearing Adidas activewear designed by McCartney performed Olympic-style feats in the Adidas gear. The combination of sport and style resulted in a 'steamy display' for fashion lovers more accustomed to the stylish if sedentary stroll of the catwalk model. The words 'sexy' and 'feminine' have been used for Stella's sporty designs. McCartney can do little wrong in the British fashion scene; she has been developing the Adidas by Stella McCartney lines since 2005. She told the press: “This collection tries to provide for all the needs of a modern woman.”
